Specifying metal railings? – Key points from Alpha Rail

Where a landscape architect, consulting engineer or client has a project requiring metal railings, various factors should be considered before a decision can be made on the choice of product.

These things include any requirements for planning permission, compliance with the relevant British Standard (BS 1722 part 9) and compliance with part K of The Building Regulations 2010.

Thought should be given over choice of railheads (finials), especially at lower heights, given this could be a risk of danger should a passer-by slip, fall or be pushed onto railheads containing sharp spikes.

If there is a severe fall in height on one side of the fence line, this needs to be taken into consideration, and the appropriate product must comply with current building regulations. Helpful advice on this topic can be found on the GOV UK website, with part K (protection from falling, collision and impact) of The Building Regulations 2010 being the relevant section of the document.

The Westminster

The Alpha Rail core railing range of Albany, Churchill, Humber, Kennington and Westminster can be manufactured to any height to suit project requirements. The height of the railings will affect the size of the infill bars, rails and posts. The gaps between vertical infill bars can also be adjusted to suit differing environments, for example infill bars that are closer together would be ideal for a play area, to prevent risk of any children becoming trapped in the railings or even squeezing through them! This is covered in BS EN 1176. Another major consideration is the method of fixing, with many options being available ranging from concrete rooted foundation, surface mounted or set into diamond cored holes to name but a few.

Guidance on all issues contained above can be found by visiting our Resource Hub, where you will find a vast array of information gathered over many years’ experience within this sector. Our sales staff can always be contacted by telephone or email, where further advice is required.
